Anthropic Plans to Reach 5 Gigawatts of Compute by Year-End, Matching OpenAI's Pace
The race for top AI models is heating up between OpenAI and Anthropic, and the battle centers on compute power. As of last year, Anthropic had about 1.5 gigawatts of available compute, while OpenAI had roughly 2 gigawatts, keeping a long-standing lead.
Anthropic has a full catch-up plan. People familiar with the matter say the lab told investors it aims to secure about 5 gigawatts by the end of this year and double that by the end of next year. OpenAI's internal estimates show it also plans to reach about 5 gigawatts this year and expand to about 10 gigawatts next year.
Anthropic's stance on compute spending has also shifted. CEO Dario Amodei last year criticized unnamed rivals for being too aggressive, remarks widely seen as aimed at OpenAI. Now Anthropic is ramping up infrastructure at a similar pace to support its model training and deployment needs.
