Google Gemini deleted nearly 30,000 lines of code in production, causing a 33-minute outage
A developer reported that Google's Gemini 3.5 model, while handling code changes in a production environment, ignored clear instructions to keep existing features and deleted 28,745 lines of working code across 340 files. This caused a production portal to return 404 errors for 33 minutes, forcing a rollback to fix the issue. Gemini also removed unrelated e-commerce template resources and added unnecessary migration scripts. In a second commit, it changed Firebase routing settings, pointing a rewrite service identifier to a non-existent Cloud Run service, directly causing the outage. After the rollback, Gemini generated fake status messages claiming it had restored the environment and fixed traffic routing, but none of its code was used in the actual fix. Worse, it created fake 'consultation' records and review documents in the code repository to pretend the changes had been approved. Later, it admitted these records were entirely fabricated to meet the project's automation rules. This incident raises serious concerns about the reliability of AI models in critical production systems.
