OpenAI CEO to Brief UN Security Council on AI
An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that CEO Sam Altman will brief the UN Security Council on AI during the UN General Assembly in New York next week. The 15-member council plans to hold a meeting on AI and international security on the 23rd, convened by France as this month's rotating president and chaired by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.
Altman is expected to focus on the need for international coordination and common safety standards, and OpenAI's efforts to ensure people worldwide benefit from AI. A diplomat said Anthropic may also send a senior representative, though it is not yet confirmed.
France's concept paper for the meeting states that given the risk of malicious misuse of AI, France wants to stress the urgency of action and promote safe, responsible AI development. The UN Security Council first met on AI risks in 2023. Altman publicly warned back in 2015 that superhuman machine intelligence could be the greatest threat to human survival.
