OpenAI hires product manager for families as ChatGPT users get older
OpenAI is hiring a product manager in San Francisco to create experiences for families, caregivers, and seniors. This move shows ChatGPT's user base is getting older.
Sensor Tower data shows that in Q2 2026, global ChatGPT users aged 35 and up grew from 26% to 31%, while users aged 18-24 dropped from 34% to 29%. In the US, about 24% of smartphone-using parents used ChatGPT, up from 16% a year ago.
Analysts say OpenAI is repositioning ChatGPT from a personal productivity tool to a family tech platform. The Family Online Safety Institute notes that AI companies need different safety designs for kids, including content controls and parental oversight. OpenAI has already launched features like parent controls for teen accounts and reasoning models for sensitive conversations.
This age shift isn't unique to ChatGPT, but it's growing faster among older users. As AI becomes a cross-age platform, we may see family subscription plans, kid-specific accounts, and AI tutoring tools soon.
