5. Tools, integrations and ecosystem costs
Cursor CLI exposes agents through interactive terminal sessions, read-only Ask, Plan and non-interactive output. That can preserve a terminal-oriented workflow. When used in scripts or CI, task inputs, exit behavior and allowed actions still need a reliable surrounding process. An automation interface alone does not make an arbitrary task appropriate for unattended execution.Cursor · CLI overview
Project rules use .mdc files under .cursor/rules; AGENTS.md and user and team rules provide other guidance layers. Shared conventions can reduce repeated explanation, but these are instructions in context. They do not guarantee compliance, and obsolete or conflicting rules can make an incorrect result harder to diagnose.Cursor · Rules
MCP connects external tools and data. Official documentation lists stdio, SSE and Streamable HTTP transports. The opportunity is access to information outside the repository. Authentication, tool permissions and the quality of returned material become additional dependencies; protocol compatibility is the beginning of integration rather than proof that a workflow works.Cursor · Model Context Protocol
Cloud Agents run in isolated cloud VMs with development environments and branch-based handoff. Remote execution reduces dependence on a continuously connected laptop, but dependencies, network access and startup conditions must work remotely. Tasks tied to local equipment or a private network may incur substantial preparation cost.Cursor · Cloud Agents
Agent Review provides local-change review with Quick and Deep levels and reads BUGBOT.md rules. It adds an inspection opportunity; we did not measure missed issues or false positives. The value depends on whether findings are actionable and relevant.Cursor · Agent Review
A larger ecosystem changes responsibility as well as convenience. Incorrect external information, missing remote services and stale rules can all resemble model failures. For a team, integration maturity means configurations are traceable, environments can be reconstructed, and permissions are understandable. Otherwise, every disappointing run becomes a fresh investigation into where the failure occurred. This upkeep belongs in the adoption assessment alongside the time saved during coding. It is particularly relevant when several developers share a workflow but use different machines or account policies.
