AI Data Centers Cause Data Heat Island Effect, Affecting 340 Million People Globally
Every time you ask ChatGPT a question or view an AI-generated image, you might not realize that the data centers behind these operations are releasing heat into the environment, forming the 'data heat island effect'.
A team led by the University of Cambridge used NASA satellite data and found that after an AI data center operates, the surrounding surface temperature rises by an average of 2°C (up to 9.1°C in extreme cases), with the heat impact extending to 10 km. 340 million people globally live in these affected areas.
GPU clusters for AI training have much higher power density than traditional servers, leading to more heat emission. Solutions include model compression, liquid cooling chips, and waste heat recycling (e.g., some European cities connect data center heat to heating networks). However, before large-scale implementation, the link between AI computing growth and temperature rise still needs attention.
