AI-generated performances and scripts no longer eligible for Oscars, new rules take effect in March 2027
Recently, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that AI-generated performances and scripts will no longer be eligible for Oscar awards. The new rules will take effect at the next awards ceremony in March 2027. While filmmakers can still use AI tools for assistance, synthetic performers cannot win any awards, and winning scripts must be created by humans.
Previously, the AI-generated role of late actor Val Kilmer appeared in the trailer for the film 'Deep as the Grave', sparking industry discussions. Many actors like Matthew McConaughey and Nicolas Cage have expressed concerns about AI replacing human practitioners, and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has also clearly opposed synthetic actors.
