AI hits entry-level coding jobs, CS enrollment drops at US colleges
Computer science programs at US colleges saw a big drop in students this fall. Undergraduate enrollment fell over 12%, and graduate programs dropped more than 10%. Data shows this continues last year's decline.
As AI has grown, companies have cut many entry-level coding jobs, making it harder for graduates to find work. In just two years, the number of CS undergrads fell 18.4%, and grad students dropped 27.1%.
Overall US college enrollment grew 0.6% this fall, the fourth straight year of growth. But new international students fell 17% after immigration policy changes, and overseas applications dropped about 10%, the biggest drop in a decade.
Community colleges were a bright spot, with enrollment up 1.2%. Researchers say students are seeking new paths, and tuition costs are a big factor.
