AI Hits India's IT Outsourcing Model, Many Computer Graduates Face Employment Crisis
The rapid iteration of AI technology is impacting India's traditional IT outsourcing model, leaving many computer graduates without AI skills facing employment difficulties. Bloomberg reports that since spring 2026, the popularity of AI models, agent tools, and 'ambient programming' tools has led to a sharp drop in demand for entry-level positions.
Infosys' team developed an 'ambient programming' tool that generates software via natural language, significantly improving delivery efficiency and representing the industry's shift toward intelligence. However, this also brings industry reshuffling: enterprises' demand for junior programmers has plummeted, while they are eager for high-end AI talent, exacerbating employment pressure due to supply-demand mismatch.
McKinsey predicts that by 2030, 30% of India's work hours may be automated, and TCS has laid off 12,000 people. India's IT index fell nearly 20%, and there is a clear AI skill gap between education and industry. Infosys has launched a long-term AI training program to address this.
