AI Openness Debate: Hinton, Li, and Ng Call for Openness, Warn Against Monopoly
At the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas, Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, World Labs co-founder Fei-Fei Li, and Coursera co-founder Andrew Ng shared their views on AI openness. All three agreed that AI development shouldn't be controlled by a few big companies, which could lead to a situation like Apple and Google dominating mobile operating systems, slowing innovation.
Hinton distinguished between open-source software and open-weight models, opposing open weights due to potential misuse for cyberattacks. However, he admitted that open-weight models are already widespread, and the debate is over. Ng emphasized that US open-source AI is facing competition from China, urging openness to stay competitive. Li argued that open vs. closed isn't a binary choice; different levels of openness can exist in the AI ecosystem, citing the Human Genome Project as an example of public-private collaboration.
All three agreed that some regulation is necessary to ensure AI develops in a beneficial direction.
