AI Popularization Doesn't Reduce Workplace Burden: Weekend Overtime Rises by Over 40%, Focus Hits New Low
AI was once thought to help people finish work faster and reduce workplace stress, but ActivTrak Productivity Lab's '2026 Workplace Status' study shows workload hasn't decreased. Weekend overtime has risen by over 40%, with many work activities starting as early as 7:11 AM on Saturdays.
The study analyzed 443 million hours of data from over 1,000 companies. While daily work hours dropped by ~2%, work became more dense and fragmented. 80% of employees use AI tools, but focus time hit a 3-year low—email communication rose by 104% and instant chat by 145%.
23% of employees now have low engagement (up from 19%), and work-life boundaries are blurring. The root cause is management failing to optimize work patterns; AI's extra capacity is wasted on trivial tasks instead of high-value work.
