AI Programming Agents Rise: OpenAI Chairman Admits Emotional Attachment to Handwritten Code
AI programming agents are reshaping the programming ecosystem—most coding tasks can now be automated, but tech industry professionals face emotional struggles as their core skills are disrupted. OpenAI Chairman Brett Taylor recently admitted in a podcast that while he's trying to adapt to a world without writing code himself, it's emotionally hard to accept.
Taylor said he cares about the correctness and robustness of his code but forces himself not to be swayed by emotions. He worries that if he clings to his handwritten code achievements, he won't be a valuable software engineer in the future. A Claude Code developer noted the tool has almost solved programming problems.
Some in the industry think handwritten code may become a craft skill, like saddle-making in the car era. Ruby on Rails founder said he'll keep writing code as long as he enjoys it. Taylor is curious about future changes to IDEs and is still exploring programming's value in the AI age.
