AI Programming Tools Shift from Assistant to Main Role: Code Generation Ratio Rose to 80% in December Last Year
Greg Brockman, President and co-founder of OpenAI, stated that AI programming tools have made significant progress in recent months, shifting from auxiliary tools for software engineers to main roles. In December last year, the proportion of code that intelligent agent programming tools could write rose from 20% to 80%. He advised entrepreneurs to embrace these rapidly iterating tools—for example, OpenAI's Codex platform has expanded to support all computer users.
Several tech companies are advancing AI code generation: Google's internal 75% of new code is generated by AI and then reviewed by humans (up from 25% in 2024); Meta plans that in its creation organization, 65% of engineers will have over 75% of their submitted code assisted by AI; Anthropic's CEO predicts that AI will write 90% of code in 3-6 months, and possibly all code in 12 months.
Brockman emphasized that OpenAI ensures merged code is the responsibility of humans. He warned against the extremes of blind use or total rejection, advocating a cautious approach to AI-generated code.
