AI Retrieval Startup SID Accuses Vector Database Chroma of Plagiarizing Its Research Results
Max Rumpf, CEO of AI retrieval research firm SID.ai, recently posted a long article on X, publicly accusing Chroma, an open-source vector database, of plagiarizing a large number of research results from SID's SID-1 model (released last December) in its newly launched Context-1 model, without any citation or acknowledgment.
Rumpf shared email exchanges with Chroma CEO Jeff Huber as evidence: In October 2025, Huber actively asked about SID's model progress, and Rumpf shared information about their intelligent retrieval model; after the SID-1 report was released in December 2025, Huber received the link and replied with congratulations. Both companies are YC alumni and have adjacent offices.
Both SID-1 and Context-1 are intelligent retrieval models trained with reinforcement learning, positioned as retrieval sub-agents for reasoning models. They share multiple similarities in speed/cost dual-view switching and parallel reasoning. Context-1's technical report does not mention SID-1, nor include it in benchmark evaluations, and its inference framework is not open-sourced, making it impossible for SID to test.
