AI search hits online media, Reddit rethinks Google deal
The Wall Street Journal reports that as AI search gradually replaces traditional browsing, online media traffic is declining, and publishers are rethinking their partnerships with Google. In 2024, Reddit signed a $60 million annual deal with Google to license content for AI training. But now users prefer AI search over browsing Reddit forums, so the platform is considering whether to renew the expiring contract.
Similar issues affect traditional media: Reuters and USA Today are considering blocking Google's content crawlers. Politico staff once planned to set up registration walls. The Economist is actively discussing leaving AI search. Meanwhile, Time is trying a new tactic—hiding ads invisible to regular readers in content, hoping AI crawlers will collect them and help advertisers reach potential customers.
