Alibaba goes all in on AI, targeting a $50 trillion market
Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai laid out the company's full-stack AI strategy at the VivaTech 2026 summit. He said AI's total addressable market should be measured against human productivity. With global GDP over $100 trillion, at least $50 trillion comes from human work—that's the AI opportunity.
Tsai highlighted Alibaba's advantages across the stack: cheap and efficient energy in China, early investments in cloud computing and chips, the popular open-source Qwen model, and business reach spanning e-commerce, instant retail, and more.
He also noted that Chinese companies are leading global AI open-source efforts, and Alibaba's team keeps pushing cutting-edge models open to the public. The company is going all in on AI as its core future strategy.
