Alibaba launches AI project to recreate ancient murals

Alibaba Charity, together with Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, Aizhidao, Wanxiang, and Duiyou, launched the 'Ancient Murals Reborn' project to digitally recreate ancient murals using AI. The first target is the Five Dynasties mural at Dayun Temple in Shanxi, the only surviving temple mural from that period. Since the murals cannot be physically restored, AI uses the Wan 2.7-Image model to identify weathering, reconstruct missing parts, and generate vibrant images while respecting the original style. Xi'an Academy says the AI has learned all the mural knowledge and is now a 'mural expert.' The tool is now available on the Duiyou platform for mural professionals. Local authorities plan to display the results at the temple.
