Altman launches AI agent Dots, says tokens are a bad metric

At OpenAI DevDay in San Francisco, US, Altman announced a new AI agent product called Dots. He said Dots handles some of his tasks and notifications, making him less dependent on his smartphone and helping him regain some of his attention.

Altman shared views on several key AI issues. He called tokens a bad metric, since different models use different amounts of tokens for the same task, so it does not reflect real value. OpenAI considered dropping the metric, but customers want a clear basis for what they pay.

On AI safety, Altman said safety must stay ahead of capability growth, and the industry should take a middle path. On jobs, he cited a 5.7% unemployment rate for recent US college graduates but said now is the best time to enter the job market.
