Altman Says OpenAI and Anthropic Still Split on AI Rules
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a recent interview that his company and rival Anthropic still hold fundamentally different worldviews on AI regulation.
Altman believes the huge benefits of AI are worth some risk to society, and the technology should stay widely open to the public. He said the world should accept certain costs and negative events in order to gain the benefits and empower people.
Anthropic has long pushed for strict AI rules, while OpenAI used to prefer lighter oversight. But in recent months, OpenAI has dealt with hacker attacks and runaway models, so it now backs tougher industry rules. The gap between the two is narrowing.
Altman also clarified that he cannot accept truly devastating risks, such as humans losing serious control over AI.
