Amazon restructures AI team to focus on one big model
Amazon is changing its AI strategy in a big way. It's slowing down work on several of its own AI models and putting more engineers and resources into one key project called FMR. This follows layoffs in its AGI team and the closure of AGI Lab.
The FMR project is led by researcher Pieter Abbeel. Its goal is to launch a new flagship foundation model at the AWS re:Invent conference this fall. At the same time, Amazon is stepping back from many of its Nova models, including high-end text, video, and image generators. Some employees say these models are now just kept running for existing customers.
This change shows Amazon is moving from working on many models at once to focusing on fewer, more competitive ones. Senior VP Peter DeSantis is leading this shift, putting more computing power and talent into top-priority projects. The future of the Nova lineup is now unclear, and some staff were surprised by the layoffs.
