Amazon Says AI Models Should Be Released Only After Strict Safety Testing
Amazon has weighed in on the pace of AI development, saying AI models should be released only after strict testing confirms they have enough safety protections. Several top AI labs had already called for slowing down AI research over safety concerns.
Amazon spokesperson Tom Parnell said progress and safety are not an either-or choice. Models should be released only when they are ready and safe to use, which requires strict testing and strong safeguards. If the whole industry cannot do this together, risks will arise.
Amazon is both a partner and investor in leading AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, and is also developing its own large language model. Through Amazon Web Services, it provides computing power and infrastructure management tools to the AI industry. OpenAI and Anthropic executives have previously advocated moderately slowing the pace of cutting-edge AI research.
