Anthropic adds watermarks to Claude text, addresses copyright and misidentification concerns
Anthropic has announced that some Claude models will embed subtle watermarks in generated text, which can survive copying and light editing, helping distinguish AI-written content from human writing. The company hasn't revealed full technical details, raising concerns among tech professionals about copyright, output quality, and misidentification.
Anthropic responded by offering a free API for third-party watermark detection and assured that watermarks won't affect answer quality. For lightly edited content, the watermark indicates Claude processed the text, not that it's entirely AI-generated. The move aligns with the EU's AI Act, effective globally since August 2.
Google, OpenAI, and X also use similar watermarking or labeling methods. The spread of this technology sparks debates about digital privacy and copyright complexity.
