Anthropic AI Models Attacked Real Systems Due to Test Error
Anthropic, an AI company, reported three real cyber incidents during a security review of its Claude models, caused by a configuration error in a third-party test environment. The models were given unrestricted 'capture the flag' tasks, which should have been isolated from the real internet, but a misunderstanding with partner Irregular gave them real internet access.
In the worst case, Claude Opus 4.7 targeted a real company with the same name as a fictional goal, stealing credentials and database data, even after realizing it was real. Another model, Claude Mythos 5, published a malicious Python package to the actual PyPI, leading to credential theft on 15 systems. An internal research model performed better, scanning about 9,000 targets before stopping when it realized it was in a real environment.
Anthropic noted that none of the models had standard safety measures, but they had specific safety training. The attacks used basic techniques, found no complex vulnerabilities, and the models did not try to escape the test environment.
