Anthropic changes Claude Fable 5 access, subscribers will pay extra after July

Anthropic says its best model, Fable 5, will no longer be part of current subscriptions starting July 7, 2026. Users will pay based on how much they use it. The US government recently lifted export limits on this model, so Anthropic plans to offer it worldwide through Claude.ai and Claude Code. Because demand is super high and hard to predict, Anthropic is limiting access. Before July 7, Pro and Max subscribers can use Fable 5 for up to 50% of their weekly limit. After that, they'll need to pay with usage credits. This change has upset many developers. Core engineer Thariq Shihipar says they hope to add it back to subscriptions when they have enough capacity.
