Anthropic Drops MatX Acquisition, Pivots to Partnership
According to Reuters, Anthropic, an AI model and service company, had considered buying AI chip maker MatX for about $7 billion, but talks have shifted to a partnership. MatX is now raising new funds at a valuation of around $4 billion.
MatX claims its MatX One chip beats all announced rivals in speed and latency, performing well in training and early inference, and also in later decoding and reinforcement learning tasks. Anthropic has been pushing its own chip efforts, recently hiring Amir Salek, former head of Google's TPU team, and has met with several AI chip startups.
Analysts say Anthropic may aim to make training or inference chips, and this partnership could support that goal.
