Anthropic plans to rent huge data centers, asks Google for financial backing
AI company Anthropic is planning to rent and run several data centers with a total capacity of over 1GW. It's asking Google's parent company Alphabet for financial support. The company has signed initial leases for more than ten data centers in the US. Insiders say Anthropic is taking a big step to expand its infrastructure.
Anthropic executives plan to ask Google to back these leases financially. There are also rumors that Google might help design chips for the data centers. Google said it won't comment on market rumors, and Anthropic hasn't responded yet. The two companies already have deep ties. Alphabet invested $500 million in Anthropic and promised another $1.5 billion. In April 2026, Google decided to invest $10 billion, with a possible $30 billion more.
As part of the deal, Anthropic has promised to spend up to $200 billion on Google Cloud over the next five years. Alphabet keeps spending big on data centers, planning about $75 billion in 2025 and $185 billion in 2026. Anthropic also works closely with Amazon, which has invested $4 billion. Over the next 10 years, Anthropic will buy more than $100 billion in computing power from Amazon AWS.
