Anthropic Signs First Australia Data Center Lease for 2.16GW Campus
Anthropic has signed its first data center lease in Australia, covering a large computing campus planned for 2.16GW. The site is about 250km west of Brisbane and will be built by Singapore developer Zerra DC. It will buy renewable power and pay for its own grid connection.
AI infrastructure uses a lot of energy, so power supply is a key factor in choosing data center locations. Australia has a small population and rich renewable resources, making it a good fit for computing infrastructure. OpenAI also signed a data center deal in Australia before.
Still, some people in Australia oppose data centers, and the government has promised to set limits on data center resource use starting in 2027.
