Apple's SQUIRE Tool: No More Uncontrollable AI-Generated Interfaces, Developers Regain Precise Control
AI-generated interfaces often lead developers into a cycle of trial and error due to semantic ambiguity or unpredictable model responses. Apple's research team has released the SQUIRE tool, which solves this pain point with innovative technology.
SQUIRE introduces an intermediate representation layer called SquireIR. Instead of generating code directly, it models the interface as a component tree with 'slots'. Developers fill these slots using natural language, and the system generates alternative options for specific positions—ensuring modifications are precise and don’t affect other UI parts, solving the over-modification issue of large models.
A study with 11 front-end developers shows the tool improves the development experience. Participants reported being more willing to try unconventional designs because modifications are predictable and easy to undo, and they were satisfied with the generated code quality and visual effects.
