Artists' Ongoing Protests Lead UK Government to Delay AI Copyright Legislation
Creative industry professionals are facing the dilemma of their works being used without authorization for AI model training. The UK government's original draft AI data bill, which allowed companies like Google and OpenAI to use copyrighted works for model training without permission, sparked strong protests from artists.
Recently, the UK government announced the delay of this legislation. After two months of public consultation, the copyright issue has been temporarily put on hold, and the bill is not expected to be included in the King's Speech agenda this May. The government will re-examine the plan and find alternative paths that balance AI development and creators' rights.
The House of Lords recommends establishing a "license-first" system and strengthening transparency mechanisms. The previous "creators opt-out" scheme was opposed by publishers, musicians, etc., who believed it was difficult to implement and could threaten the survival of the UK's creative industry.
