Australia Bans Pure AI Songs from Official Music Charts
Australia's recording industry body, ARIA, has announced that songs entirely generated by AI will be banned from official music charts starting next week. This follows a controversy where an AI-remixed version of Madonna's 'Like a Prayer' stayed in Australia's top 20 for 16 weeks. The new rule requires songs to be created, sung, or feature main instruments by humans, and must be made using legal AI services. Pure AI music is also barred from ARIA awards. This aligns with the global industry standard that songs must be 'primarily human-created'. Sydney Conservatorium lecturer Alexis Weaver praised the move as a good step, emphasizing that creators should keep control and make key creative decisions amid the rise of AI tools.
