Australia's AI data center debate is said to be influenced by US sentiment
Australian political and business figures say growing public discontent over AI data centers is largely imported from the US and does not fully reflect local conditions.
Like the US, Australian communities are increasingly pushing back against data center projects. But officials and executives who support construction say Australian data centers are smaller and more strictly regulated, with far less impact than those in the US. Heated US debates are spreading through social media and intensifying negative sentiment locally.
Industry data shows the US has 5,400 data centers with 53.7GW total capacity, while Australia has only 252 with 1.4GW. But Australia is rapidly accelerating, with multiple 1GW-scale projects planned, including a 2.4GW project outside Melbourne and a 2GW gas-powered project in the Northern Territory.
The Australian government plans to ban natural gas for powering data centers and require operators to add equivalent renewable energy. Two state inquiries and one federal inquiry are reviewing the industry, while new project applications continue to grow and spark local opposition.
