Australian Host Used AI to Fake Leak Photo for $1,700 Claim, Airbnb Penalizes Account

A Reddit user named FurinaDeFontaine said that after checking out of an Airbnb in Australia, the host sent a photo claiming a toilet leak and demanded $1,700 for repairs. The user noticed the flooding made no sense given the building layout and suspected the image was AI-generated.

The user analyzed the photo with Google Gemini and found a Google SynthID watermark, confirming it was generated by Gemini. The user then contacted Airbnb support. Airbnb ruled the host's compensation claim invalid and penalized the host's account.

The incident serves as a reminder to photograph rooms, bathrooms and other dispute-prone areas before leaving a rental or hotel, and to keep video records for damage claim disputes. It also shows people should not easily trust photos online, as many may have been altered by AI and may not reflect reality.
