Berlin Police Launch AI Cameras to Monitor High-Crime Areas
Berlin police have launched a pilot program using AI surveillance cameras in the Kotbusser Tor area, a high-crime zone. The first four weeks will be for installation and testing, after which the cameras will be officially put into use. The cameras use spatial AI technology to analyze people's movements and identify potential criminal or violent behavior. When the system detects violence or vandalism, a connected display will light up and send alerts to officers, who then decide whether to take action. Police plan to expand the program to other high-crime areas in Berlin.
This is not Germany's first attempt to bring AI into police work. In February, the German finance, interior, and justice ministries announced reforms to modernize core security agencies, introducing AI to fight organized crime, with a focus on financial crime, money laundering, and drug trafficking. Customs and the Federal Criminal Police Office also set up a joint data analysis center and investigation teams.
Germany is a federal state, with state police handling daily law enforcement and most criminal investigations, while federal police handle border, railway, and aviation security.
