Bill Gates Calls for US Congress to Regulate AI Development

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently called on the US Congress to pass laws regulating AI development in an interview on NBC News' "Meet the Press." He said industry self-regulation alone is not enough, and that law enforcement and politicians must help set safety rules and oversight, with mandatory requirements.

Gates noted these rules would add some burden to the industry but would not significantly slow its work. He also warned that malicious groups already have the ability to use AI to cause mass casualties, calling the combination of ill-intentioned people and the latest AI tools more powerful than any weapon.

Gates has repeatedly warned about AI risks, saying no government in the world is ready for the social changes AI will bring, and voicing concern that the technology could wipe out many jobs and seriously hurt the economy.
