Bitcoin Miners Shift to AI: Mining Costs Surpass Price by $20k, Sell BTC to Fund AI Transition
The Bitcoin mining industry is undergoing a structural shift. In Q4 2025, the average mining cost for listed miners rose to ~$80k per BTC, while the price hovered around $70k, leading to a loss of nearly $20k per coin—making the profit model unsustainable.
Against this backdrop, miners are shifting to AI and high-performance computing infrastructure. So far, the industry has signed over $70 billion in related contracts; some companies expect 70% of their revenue to come from AI by end-2026, transitioning into data center operators.
Funding for the transition comes mainly from selling Bitcoin reserves—listed miners have sold over 15k BTC. However, this impacts Bitcoin network security: global hash rate dropped from 1160 EH/s to 920 EH/s, with consecutive difficulty adjustments.
Market valuations are divided: AI-transitioning miners have a 12.3x forward revenue multiple, while pure mining firms have only 5.9x. Industry insiders say whether Bitcoin returns to $100k will determine if the shift is temporary or permanent.
