ByteDance develops its own CPU to meet AI demand and chip shortage
ByteDance is developing its own CPU due to rising chip prices and shortages, aiming to meet the growing demand for AI infrastructure. This move reflects the industry's shift to AI 'inference,' which requires more CPU power alongside Nvidia GPUs. Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are also making custom CPUs to cut costs and improve performance.
The company plans to use its own CPU in its servers and data centers for internal operations, and is preparing to launch multiple AI agent products like Coze. ByteDance is exploring both Arm and RISC-V chip designs to manage risks. With Intel and AMD facing long delivery times and price hikes of 10% to 35%, ByteDance is speeding up its in-house chip development.
