The New York Times reports that a 16-year-old hiker in Canada used Anthropic's chatbot Claude to plan a hike to Crown Mountain near Vancouver. He took a wrong turn onto a steep ridge that requires climbing gear and was rescued by helicopter.
The teen planned an 8-hour round trip from Grouse Mountain. After climbing partway with bare hands, he found the terrain too risky to climb back down. He got stuck on a ledge about 5 feet wide. His mother called the police, and a rescue team flew him out by helicopter.
The teen said he doesn't blame Claude and takes responsibility himself. He also used Google Maps and AllTrails while planning. A rescue leader said AI doesn't know the real terrain and can't replace a hiker's experience and common sense.
