China pushes green power to fuel AI growth
At the 2026 World AI Conference in Shanghai, China's energy authority said it will build a new energy system to support AI with green power. Nearly 40% of all electricity used in the country is now green, ensuring a cleaner shift for computing power.
Energy chief Wang Hongzhi noted that green electricity is abundant and reliable, turning green computing from idea into practice. As AI reasoning tasks will soon consume more power than training, power grids and computing need to work together closely, integrating smart computing, big models, and data resources.
Data shows China's computing power facilities used 170 billion kWh in 2025, up 30% year-on-year, accounting for 1.6% of total electricity use, expected to reach 6% by 2030. By June 2025, China's total installed power capacity exceeded 4 billion kW, with renewable energy over 2.4 billion kW, ranking first globally.
