Chinese Academy of Sciences launches 'Langya' 2.0 ocean forecast model
The Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has released 'Langya' 2.0, an AI model for global ocean forecasting. Building on the 1.0 version from 2024, this new model can predict complex ocean events like typhoons, rainfall, storm surges, and sea ice, using six specialized sub-models.
Traditional ocean forecasting relies on numerical equations, which are slow and less accurate. 'Langya' 2.0 improves typhoon path and intensity predictions for the next 24 hours by combining atmospheric and ocean data, satellite images, and historical typhoon patterns. It also uses global satellite rain data to warn of extreme downpours and can forecast Arctic sea ice at a 3-kilometer resolution for months ahead.
This AI model will help with disaster prevention and shipping safety, marking a big step forward for China's ocean AI technology.
