Claude Desktop App Incompatible with Win11 March Update, Users Report Multiple Issues
Recently, the AI programming tool Claude Desktop has severe compatibility issues with Microsoft Windows 11's March security update KB5079473, drawing widespread attention from developers. Users reported multiple problems including installation failures, missing Hyper-V, crashes, and abnormal OAuth processes.
Many users encountered error prompts when trying to install Claude Desktop, which redirected them to the Microsoft Store—where no official version of Claude Desktop is available. Win11 Home users faced app crashes when using the Cowork feature due to lack of Hyper-V virtualization support. Even if installed successfully, the app had poor stability: frequent crashes requiring system restarts, and frequent OAuth authentication issues. Some users had to enable developer mode to bypass installation barriers.
The Windows 10 platform was also affected, even causing task manager crashes. The ClaudeCode VSCode extension performed poorly in WSL environments: it froze when generating over 600 lines of code, repeated PowerShell calls 38 times at WSL startup leading to 30-second input delays, and memory leaks up to 21GB. Anthropic marked key bugs as "not planned to fix" citing no WSL testing and locked related discussions, which users criticized as irresponsible to developers.
