CME to Launch AI GPU Rental Futures
CME Group and GPU market intelligence firm Silicon Data are teaming up to launch futures contracts based on NVIDIA AI GPU rental prices. The two contracts, named "Silicon Data H100 Rental Index Futures" and "Silicon Data B200 Rental Index Futures," each represent the cost of renting a GPU for one month. They aim to go live on October 5 at NYMEX, pending regulatory approval.
CME says these new financial tools give companies a way to manage computing costs and smooth out volatile pricing, while also making the GPU market more transparent and offering a window into future AI spending. Silicon Data CEO Carmen Li noted that previously, two companies buying the same GPU capacity could see wildly different prices with no way to compare. The new benchmark provides a public, tradeable reference price, turning computing resources from a blind negotiation point into a market that businesses can plan around.
