Debian developers vote on whether to allow AI in coding
Debian developers started a vote this week on whether to allow AI language models in their work. There are three choices: completely ban AI tools, allow AI help but developers take full responsibility, or reject AI as much as possible with some exceptions.
Proposal A wants to totally ban AI-generated code and docs, citing unclear copyright and quality issues. Proposal B allows AI help but requires developers to ensure everything follows Debian's license rules. Proposal C says a full ban isn't realistic, so contributors should avoid AI when possible and disclose if they use it.
The vote shows the open-source community's mixed feelings about AI—worried about copyright and quality, but aware AI is already part of development. The outcome will shape Debian's future rules and teamwork.
