Developer uses Claude Code to build native macOS driver for HP printer in 4 hours
A teenage developer named Kuber Mehta used Anthropic's AI coding tool Claude Code to create a native macOS driver for the HP Laser 1008a printer, solving the lack of official Mac support. After discovering the printer didn't work with his Mac, Mehta had Claude Code help analyze software, reverse-engineer the printing process, and write code, finishing the driver in just 4 hours.
The project initially relied on a proprietary codec from HP's Linux driver and ran in a Linux container. Later, Mehta switched to a modified open-source SpliX printing engine with native macOS USB components, removing the need for HP's proprietary parts or Linux containers. The driver is now open source and supports HP Laser 1003, 1006, and 1008 series printers.
