Ex-Google engineer builds search engine with Claude Code, zero hand-written code
Hugh Williams, a former Google engineering lead, recently demonstrated a practical test of Claude Code. He used Anthropic's coding assistant to build a search engine called Zettair, which indexed 1.5 million Wikipedia entries. The project features autocomplete, snippets, related searches, trending topics, and AI-generated summaries.
Williams stressed that he didn't write a single line of code by hand, relying entirely on Claude Code. However, the search engine's underlying retrieval framework came from an information retrieval system he helped develop in the early 2000s, which laid the foundation for the project's success.
His key takeaway is that AI won't replace engineers. Williams believes Claude Code works best only when paired with solid technical expertise. He compares using AI for development to being a guide, and says experienced engineers are always the best guides.
