First Global AI Governance Dialogue Kicks Off in Geneva
The first Global AI Governance Dialogue opened in Geneva, Switzerland, on July 6, bringing together about 1,500 representatives from around the world for two days of talks. Set up by a UN General Assembly resolution in 2025, it's the UN's first global platform for AI governance, letting all 193 member states and other stakeholders discuss a shared path forward.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at the opening that AI is growing at an incredible pace, and the question is whether we can steer it together. He called for turning global participation into real action to make AI safer, fairer, more accessible, and more ethical.
The first dialogue focuses on four key topics: AI's opportunities and impacts, building capacity and closing the AI gap, trustworthy AI, and human rights with human oversight. A separate Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, made up of 40 experts, will provide scientific assessments to link cutting-edge AI research with policymaking, helping the world spot emerging challenges and make smart decisions.
