First Humanoid Robot Penalty Shootout Coming to MWC Shanghai 2026

GSMA announced the first-ever humanoid robot penalty shootout competition, set to take place at MWC Shanghai on June 24-25, 2026. Eight top teams from China will compete, with robots autonomously handling every move—from spotting the ball to shooting—without remote control or preset scripts. The format follows World Cup rules, including sudden death overtime. Awards will be given for best shooter, best goalkeeper, and best celebration. The opening ceremony will feature a parade of robots and a unique kickoff involving land, water, and air robotic lifeforms.
