Gartner: $7 Trillion AI Infrastructure Boom Faces $4 Trillion Impairment Risk
Global AI infrastructure investment is booming, but research firm Gartner's latest forecast shows a clear gap between the massive spending and actual returns.
Gartner says global AI infrastructure investment will reach $7 trillion from 2026 to 2030, yet generate at most $3.6 trillion in revenue by 2030. Senior analyst Will Sommer noted that with financing costs and a 12% return target, revenue should hit $8.5 trillion — leaving a gap of about $5 trillion.
The firm expects AI infrastructure investment won't reach the 12% return target until 2032. Before then, over $4 trillion in assets could face impairment risk.
Gartner also predicts that by 2030, more than 80% of Neoclouds — new AI cloud providers — will stop running on their own, as they struggle to earn back their money amid fast chip upgrades and limited industry spending growth.
