German court says Google is responsible for AI search overview content
A court in Munich, Germany, has ordered Google to stop using its AI-generated search summaries that spread false claims about two local publishers. The court says Google is directly responsible for the content its AI creates, because it's not just a list of search results but content made by Google itself.
The AI wrongly linked the publishers to scams and bad business practices, making up claims that weren't in any of the linked sources. The publishers asked Google to stop, but Google didn't respond properly.
The court ruled that the AI rewrites and judges information in its own way, like starting with "Yes, Company X is known for shady business practices" and then adding warnings and tips. Since Google controls the AI and how it works, the court says Google must take responsibility for what the AI says.
