GitHub Copilot's Unauthorized Ad Insertions in Developers' PRs Spark Outrage; GitHub Pulls the Feature Immediately
For developers, pull requests (PRs) are a core part of code collaboration, supposed to focus on code quality. But recently, an action by GitHub Copilot has caused strong dissatisfaction among the developer community.
An Australian developer found that Copilot inserted ad content in his PR without permission, such as links and copy recommending the Raycast tool. Statistics show over 11,400 PRs had similar issues, and developers were annoyed by this unauthorized modification.
GitHub responded quickly, saying it was a new feature attempt but had poor results. They have urgently withdrawn the behavior and emphasized no plans to add ads to the platform.
Developers are advised to pay attention to tool permission settings later to avoid similar issues affecting collaboration efficiency.
