GitHub Copilot to Switch to Token-Based Pricing in June; Subscription Model for AI Coding Tools Under Pressure
Microsoft recently announced it will pause new user registrations for GitHub Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Student plans. It also reduced limits for personal plans and removed the Claude Opus model from Pro packages. This adjustment aims to better serve existing customers and handle pressure from surging usage.
Over the past few months, AI model upgrades and improved agent capabilities have driven a sharp increase in GitHub Copilot usage. Similarly, Anthropic, a leader in AI coding, has added restrictions and cut limits—indicating the subscription model is unsustainable. Both companies are shifting to token-based pricing.
GitHub Copilot will adopt token-based pricing starting June 1. Users still pay monthly subscriptions but no longer get fixed request limits; instead, they receive corresponding token credits. For example, using GPT-5.4 costs $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. Enterprise users get shared credits—like the $19/month Business plan giving $30 in token credits.
